This contribution is the introduction to the volume "Pandemic in capitalism of the 21st century", PM edizioni, Varazze (SV), edited by Alessandra Ciattini and Marco A. Pirrone. This article describes the contents of this volume. In recent months much has been written and said about the pandemic, produced by coronavirus SARS-CoV2, which results in COVID 19 and which is causing deaths all over the world, affecting above all those social strata that, due to their own living conditions, do not know how to defend themselves. The book returns to the subject, examining the interactive play of the different factors that lie at the root of this dramatic social phenomenon and that constitutes yet another warning, from the most unheeded, about the real conditions of our planet and the possibility that life can continue to reproduce in it. Within the analysis of these different factors we wanted to pay particular attention to the economic dimension, convinced that there is a close correlation between the capitalist way of production, the manipulation of nature - and the upheaval of ecological structures and the biodiversity that it determines - and the genesis of pandemic events. In order to better develop this approach and to connect the economic sphere to other aspects of social life, we have resorted to the contributions of various specialists (biologists, virologists, doctors, sociologists, philosophers, economists, jurists), but with an anti-reductionist sensibility. That is, able to focus the dimension of their relevance without obfuscating the complex relationships between this and the other levels of social life.
