The thermal springs of Termini Imerese are linked in myth to the presence of Herakles from the Archaic period. The relationship between the tale told by Diodoros of Sicily that the springs were created by the nymphs to restore the Boiotan hero and the popularity of Herakles in the northen part of the island find strong support from archaeological evidence, non only in the Greek colony of Himera , but also in its wider territory. It is likely that a thermal building existed in the area since the pre-Roman era, but it was only after the deduction of a Roman colony in the Augustan age that a richly decorated monumental building was built, which recent excavations have partially brought to light.
