PROTEZIONE E MIGLIORAMENTO DELLE PRESTAZIONI ANTINCENDIO NEI TEATRI ALL’ITALIANA. FIRE PROTECTION AND PERFORMANCE UPGRADE IN ITALIAN STYLE THEATRES

Historically fires have been the main reasons of destroying of many Italian Style theatres. However, recently uneducated and detrimental works of conservation, restoration and adaptation to fire protection regulations have distorted in many cases the architectonic and constructive characteristic elements. As for every historic building, in theatres, where the ephemeral connotes many parts of the construction, we must guarantee the “primary safety”, the human lives safeguard, as well as “secondary” one, the protection of the edifice and its intrinsic value. The process of achieving suitable levels of performance and safety, while maintaining the historical fabric, can pose many challenges for regulators, designers and contractors. In this paper, firstly we are trying to review the evolution of fire safety in historical theatres, the reasons of fire, the solutions and the equipment implementation done to lower such a risk. Today, as in the past, the attainment of a suitable fireproof safety level needs to take in mind different aspects into account. These problems include the combustible materials presence (wooden historical structure particularly, as well as new ones, characteristic of this typology of theatre building), to enhance the resistance to fire, the existing fire system implementation as well as a fast emergency services access and the guidelines to a better design of fire system in a historical theatre, all of this to guarantee safety suitable levels and conservation of the most fragile parts of these architectures. At the end, we are analysing some possible and compatible solutions to prevent the release and propagation of fire in historical theatres: the first principal lead to protocols and comprehensive standards for air conditioning system and electrical equipment, the second principal introduces the innovative designs of new or existent wooden structures to reduce the speed of fire propagation.

Se storicamente gli incendi sono stati la causa principale di distruzione di molti teatri all’italiana, ancora in un recente passato interventi di conservazione, restauro e adeguamento alle norme antincendio, in alcuni casi incolti e irrispettosi, ne hanno stravolto gli elementi architettonico-costruttivi caratterizzanti. Come per ogni edificio storico, ancor più nei Teatri, in cui l’effimero connota molte parti della costruzione, è necessario garantire oltre alla salvaguardia delle vite umane, la protezione dell’edificio e del suo valore intrinseco. Il processo per raggiungere livelli adeguati di prestazioni e sicurezza antincendio pone pertanto molte sfide per i legislatori, i progettisti e gli operatori. In questo saggio, si analizza l’evoluzione del concetto di sicurezza antincendio nei teatri, le principali cause di incendio, le soluzioni e l’implementazione dei sistemi per ridurre il rischio. Oggi come in passato, il raggiungimento di un adeguato livello di sicurezza antincendio deve infatti tener conto di istanze differenti: la presenza diffusa di materiali combustibili (le strutture in legno storiche e quelle più recenti, che informano e caratterizzano questa tipologia teatrale), l’opportunità di implementare i sistemi antincendio esistenti e potenziarli con nuove soluzioni, la necessità di ottimizzare l’accessibilità per gli interventi di emergenza e le vie di esodo, l’urgenza inderogabile di formulare linee di indirizzo specifiche per gli interventi finalizzati alla sicurezza antincendio nei teatri storici che contemperino livelli adeguati di sicurezza e tutela delle parti più “fragili”. Si analizzano infine alcune delle soluzioni attualmente disponibili per mitigare, in un’ottica di miglioramento, il rischio e le conseguenze di un incendio nei teatri storici e quanto queste possano essere considerate compatibili con il patrimonio architettonico teatrale: dai protocolli e standard per gli impianti elettrici e di climatizzazione, agli accorgimenti per la progettazione delle nuove strutture in legno e per gli interventi su quelle esistenti finalizzati a ridurre la velocità di propagazione delle fiamme.
