«COME I PADRI NEI CONFRONTI DEI FIGLI» SUI «GIURAMENTI SOLENNI» TRA CARTAGINESI E FENICI (HDT. III 19)

A passage of the third book of Herodotus’ Histories mentions the parental bond between Carthaginians and Phoenicians of the motherland, sealed by «big oaths», dating back to the time of the foundation of Carthage. Scholars have often interpreted this evidence as a projection on the Phoenician-Punic world of a connection that used to link Greek colonists to their motherland. However, a closer look at the documentation reveals the profound solidarity between the Phoenicians of the East and those of the West. Furthermore, the comparison with the «covenants» between Thereans and Cyrenaeans stipulated at the time of the foundation of Cyrene and conserved on the so-called «Stele of the Founders», allows for a better understanding of the nature of biological and cultural relationships between colonies and mother cities, whose cohesion and solidarity were assured by the binding force of the oath.

Un passo del terzo libro delle Storie di Erodoto racconta del legame parentale che univa i Cartaginesi ai Fenici della madrepatria, suggellato da “grandi giuramenti”, che risalivano al tempo della fondazione di Cartagine. Gli studiosi hanno spesso interpretato questa testimonianza come una proiezione sul mondo fenicio-punico delle relazioni che solitamente univano i coloni alla loro madrepatria. Tuttavia, l’esame della documentazione da cui emerge la solidarietà profonda tra Fenici d’Oriente e d’Occidente e un confronto con i “patti” che Terei e Cirenei stipularono al tempo della fondazione di Cirene, conservati sulla cosiddetta “Stele dei Fondatori”, consentono di ricostruire la relazione di natura biologica che attraversò, nel corso della sua storia, il mondo fenicio-punico, la cui coesione e solidarietà era garantita dalla forza vincolante che la pratica del giuramento assicurava.
