The paper aims to explain two distinct but related aspects of the linguistic sign. That is to say: linearity and non-linearity. In order to satisfy this theoretical purpose, we will seek to analyze the conceptual background of saussurean linguistics in the light of some insights of the so-called emergentist epistemologies. As we will show, the concept of downward causation play a pivotal role in such a theoretical framework.
