The daily recording of all costs, including payments to the workers, was in actuality a widespread practice in the building sites of the fortifications in Sicily. These ledgers have sadly been lost, with the exception of one volume that records the accounts for the construction of the fortifications of Trapani in 1527 and 1528, and other two relating to Palermo, dating between November 12, 1536 and August 23, 1539. The ledger of Trapani walls testifies to the progress of the work of what can be considered the first project in Sicily for the overall redesign of urban defenses according to the principles of trace italienne fortification, certainly the most important work of the Royal engineer Pietro Tomasello Antonio from Padua. The two volumes of payments for the fortifications of Palermo, record the start of the implementation of Ferramolino’s design, which in addition to the construction of new bastions, called for significant demolition of pre-existing structures, including some of recent construction. The documents examined here enable us to trace a cross-section that helps to deepen our knowledge of the building sites set up for the construction of fortifications in Sicily in the first decades of 16th century. It is clear from the general picture and the examples examined here that a precise and replicable organizational model existed, and that care was taken to establish a pyramidal organizational structure that was somewhat articulated, and still able to guarantee efficiency, speed and quality of the works as well as financial management and control.
