The text examines the genesis of the first collection of Sicilian folk songs, printed in the nineteenth century (first edition 1857, revised and expanded edition 1874). The biography of the Author – Leonardo Vigo – is intertwined with the politics and cultural history of Sicily, between “Risorgimento” and the early period after the Italian unification. His Raccolta amplissima di canti popolari siciliani [Wide Collection of Sicilian Folk Songs] reflects the changing of political reasons and methodological contrasts that arise between romantic positions and new positivist trend in the second half of nineteenth century, rousing intense reactions among contemporary scholars and fueling a broader debate in the field of anthropologic historiography in twentieth century. Rebuilding this articulate critical itinerary is specially designed to highlight the pioneering value of Vigo’s ethnographic work, also in relation with the modern ethnomusicology research.
